There are many ways to break a tooth. It can happen when you bite down on a hard substance, by sustaining a blow to the mouth, or by taking a nasty fall where you land on your face. Unfortunately, a broken tooth can lead to a great deal of pain and if not treated promptly, serious oral health issues down the road. If you have a broken tooth, it is crucial that you get it fixed immediately to prevent more expensive and extensive dental work in the future.

Dentistry at Main offers several options to fix your broken tooth. Depending on the nature of your injury, our Kanata dentists may recommend one of the following treatments:

Dental fillings – Dental fillings are an excellent option if the break only affected the outer part of your tooth. Dr. Barakat will place the filling material in your tooth to close up any gaps caused by the fracture. We only use tooth-coloured fillings, so your restoration will match the color of your natural teeth.

Dental bonding – Dental bonding can be used to build back up a broken tooth. Dr. Barakat will place the bonding material on your tooth and mold it into the desired shape. A special light will be used to harden the material on your tooth.

Dental crowns – For teeth that have sustained more serious damage, Dr. Barakat may recommend a dental crown. Your crown will be placed on top of your broken tooth to cover the damage and prevent further injury. Dentistry at Main only uses porcelain crowns, which will blend in seamlessly with your smile.

Porcelain veneers – If you have broken a front tooth, porcelain veneers can be bonded to the surface of the tooth to make it look whole again.

Root canal – If your broken tooth is serious enough to have damaged the nerves, you may need a root canal to remove the damaged nerves and abscessed pulp. A dental crown will then be placed on top of your tooth to protect it from additional damage.

Please contact Dentistry at Main today to schedule your initial consultation. We serve patients in Kanata, Ottawa, and Stittsville, Ontario.

Your tooth enamel is one of the hardest structures in your body, and it provides a great deal of protection to your teeth. But even with this hard exterior layer, it is possible to chip a tooth. Biting down on something hard, receiving a blow to the face, or falling and hitting your face on the ground can easily result in a chipped tooth.

It is important to repair a chipped tooth as soon as possible to prevent further damage. If left untreated, your chipped tooth can become infected, and you may require more extensive dental work to save the tooth.

At Dentistry at Main, we offer a variety of treatments to repair your chipped tooth. Our Kanata dentists will recommend one of the following procedures:

Dental bonding – Dental bonding is an excellent treatment to repair a small chip in your tooth. Dr. Barakat will apply a small amount of composite bonding material to your tooth to cover up the chip and rebuild the tooth. A special light is then used to harden the material.

Dental crowns – Dental crowns are an ideal solution to repair larger chips or cracks in your tooth. Dr. Barakat can cover the chipped tooth with a porcelain crown to protect it from further damage. Your dental crown will look just like your natural teeth, so no one will even notice the restoration.

Porcelain veneers – Dr. Barakat can apply porcelain veneers to the front surface of your teeth to cover up any chips. Your veneers can be customized to match the color and shape of your neighboring teeth so that they blend in seamlessly with your smile.

Please contact Dentistry at Main today to schedule your initial consultation. We serve patients in Kanata, Ottawa, and Stittsville, Ontario.

If you have crooked or misaligned teeth that bother you when you look in the mirror, our Kanata cosmetic dentistry team can help. After examining your teeth, Dr. Barakat will recommend the procedure he believes would best fit your needs. In most cases, the best option for correcting mild or moderately crooked teeth is porcelain veneers.

Porcelain veneers are sometimes called “instant orthodontics” because of their ability to transform the shape and appearance of your smile without the need for a lengthy braces treatment. These thin, custom-made porcelain shells are bonded to the front of your teeth to cover imperfections and straighten your smile line. The porcelain is designed to replicate the translucent appearance of enamel, giving veneers a beautiful, natural aesthetic.

If you have severely crooked teeth, Dr. Barakat may recommend Invisalign®. A popular alternative to braces, Invisalign® uses a series of clear, removable teeth aligners to gradually move your crooked teeth back into proper alignment. The average Invisalign® treatment process lasts up to a year, but for many patients, the results are more than worth the time and effort.

If you live in the Kanata, Stittsville, or Ottawa areas of Ontario and would like more information about fixing crooked teeth with cosmetic dentistry, please contact Kanata dentist Dr. Ami Barakat today to schedule your initial consultation.

Years ago, perfect smiles were only attainable by the rich and famous. If you had a large enough bank account, you can afford to have a beautiful celebrity smile. But today, advances in cosmetic dentistry technology have made a beautiful smile within your reach. Kanata dentist Dr. Ami Barakat will customize your treatment to address your unique needs. Depending on your goals, the Dr. Barakat may recommend a combination of the following procedures to help you achieve the celebrity smile of your dreams:

Tooth whitening – Dr. Barakat uses the PolaOffice + in-office teeth whitening system, which can brighten your teeth up to 12 shades in one office visit. If you prefer to whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home, ask Dr. Barakat about the Pola Day at-home whitening system.

Porcelain veneers – Porcelain veneers are one of the most versatile cosmetic dentistry treatments, and Dr. Barakat often recommends it as part of a smile makeover.

With so many websites offering advice on the proper way to care for your teeth, distinguishing fact from myth can become a difficult task. Below are some of the most popular dental myths, along with the truth about them.

Myth: Brushing my teeth several times a day harms the tooth enamel.

Truth: This is partially true, but not a reason to refrain from brushing your teeth. While brushing twice a day will generally be sufficient, you will still experience oral hygiene benefits by brushing more frequently, such as after every meal. Make sure you use a soft toothbrush to prevent damaging your tooth enamel.

Myth: I shouldn’t brush my teeth if my gums are bleeding.

Truth: Bleeding gums are a sign that you may be developing gum disease. It is important to visit Kanata dentist Dr. Ami Barakat as soon as possible to receive treatment before your gum disease gets more serious. However, you should still continue brushing your teeth until you can see Dr. Barakat. Just make sure you use a soft or extra soft toothbrush.

Myth: I do not need to see the dentist if there is no visible problem with my teeth or if I do not have any pain in my mouth.

Truth: It is important to visit Dr. Barakat twice a year for your regularly scheduled teeth cleanings. It is common for Dr. Barakat to detect oral health problems such as cavities, infections, or gum disease at these cleanings. By coming twice a year, you ensure that these problems are treated in their early stages.

Myth: After a cavity is treated, the tooth will never decay again.

Truth: This is the goal, but it cannot be guaranteed. In order to ensure that your repaired tooth does not decay again, you will need to properly care for your tooth by brushing and flossing daily, and visiting Dr. Barakat for your regularly scheduled teeth cleanings.

Myth: It is better to treat a decaying tooth than to remove it.

Truth: The decision about whether to treat or remove a decaying tooth can only be made by an experienced dentist. Dr. Barakat will examine the condition of your tooth, and if he feels it can be restored, he will recommend the ideal dental treatment to correct the problem. However, there are some instances where it may be in your best interest to have the tooth extracted. If this is the case, Dr. Barakat will advise you accordingly.

Please contact Dentistry at Main to schedule your initial dental evaluation. We serve patients in Kanata, Ottawa, and Stittsville, Ontario.

Gaps in your teeth can mar an otherwise beautiful smile. If you find that you are often embarrassed to smile due to unsightly gaps, you are not alone. At Dentistry at Main, we help many patients who wish to fix gaps in their teeth.

Our Kanata dentists offer several cosmetic dentistry solutions that can help you eliminate gaps in your teeth:

Dental bonding

Porcelain veneers

Invisalign

Dental bonding is an effective method to repair a gap in your teeth. Dr. Barakat will apply a composite material to your tooth to reshape it. A special light will then be used to bond the material to your teeth. With dental bonding, Dr. Barakat can eliminate the gaps to your teeth in just one short visit to our Kanata dental office.

Porcelain veneers can also be used get rid of the gaps in your teeth. Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain which get bonded to the front surface of your teeth to cover up any cosmetic issues you may have. In just two office visits, Dr. Barakat can complete your porcelain veneers treatment, eliminating the gap in your smile once and for all.

If you have the patience to undergo orthodontic treatment, Dr. Barakat may recommend Invisalign as the ideal solution to fix the gaps in your teeth. Invisalign uses a set of clear retainers which will gradually move your teeth to their desired position. You will wear each aligner for approximately two weeks before moving to the next one in the set. Invisalign offers several benefits compared to traditional orthodontics:

Clear aligners will not be noticed by others

Aligners are removable, promoting better oral hygiene and allowing you to eat your favorite foods

Custom-made aligners will not irritate your teeth and gums like traditional braces

At your initial consultation, Dr. Barakat will discuss all of these options with you in detail and recommend the ideal cosmetic dentistry solution to address your needs.

Please contact Dentistry at Main today to schedule your initial consultation. Dr. Barakat serves patients in Kanata, Ottawa, and Stittsville, Ontario.

Quality dental work offers you many benefits. It can improve your oral health, restore function to your bite, and boost your confidence in your smile. But when you receive bad dental work, it often has the opposite effect. You may experience pain, the functionality of your bite may suffer, and you may feel embarrassed by the appearance of your smile.

At Dentistry at Main, our Kanata dentists have the skills and experience to get your dental work right the first time, and we can fix poor dental work that’s already been done.

The best way to avoid receiving bad dental work is to choose a cosmetic dentist who has the skills and experience to deliver the exceptional results you deserve. When researching potential dentists, make sure to evaluate their training and qualifications, view before and after photos of actual patient results, and ask for the names of a few patients who can serve as referrals. You should also make sure your dentist uses the most advanced technology available.

Unfortunately, if you have already received bad dental work, this advice may be too little, too late. However, you still have options.
At your initial consultation, Dr. Ami Barakat will evaluate the condition of your teeth and gums before recommending the ideal general or cosmetic dentistry treatments necessary to correct the bad dental work you received.

Please contact Dentistry at Main today to schedule your initial consultation. We serve patients in Kanata, Ottawa, and Stittsville, Ontario.

Adopting a dental hygiene routine keeps your teeth and body healthy. Oral hygiene includes:

Brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush

Replacing your toothbrush every three to six months

Flossing once a day, curving the floss around the sides of each tooth and up to the gumline

Visiting the dentist for a cleaning every six months

There is a correct way to brush your teeth, and at Dentistry @ Main, the staff and dentists are committed to patient education. Dr. Ami Barakat will show you how to brush most effectively, which includes:

Brushing the outer surfaces of your teeth. Gently brush in circular motions at a 45 degree angle to your gums.

Brushing your molars. Use back and forth motions on the chewing surfaces of your teeth.

Brushing your upper and lower front teeth. Brush both the inner and outer surfaces of these teeth.

Brush your tongue. Bacteria can accumulate on your tongue as well as your teeth.

Combining proper at-home oral hygiene with regular dental cleanings reduces plaque buildup and gum disease. Oral hygiene reduces the bacteria present in plaque and protects your oral and overall health.

To learn more about general oral hygiene and to schedule a dental cleaning, please contact Ottawa-area dentist Dr. Ami Barakat at Dentistry @ Main today.

At Dentistry @ Main, our experienced staff and dentists provide dental care for the whole family. Family dentistry ensures everyone in your family receives general dentistry services.

The benefits of choosing a family dentist include:

Accommodate busy lifestyles

Effectively treat patients of any age

Child-friendly environment

When you choose a family dentist, you can often schedule appointments for multiple family members in the same day, at the same location. You won’t have to drive to multiple dental offices to ensure your family’s dental health.

Your child’s first dental appointment should be scheduled within six months of the appearance of the first tooth. By showing your child the importance of good oral hygiene early on, you will instill the value of oral health. At Dentistry @ Main, dentistry for children includes laser cavity removal, a painless and needle-free way to protect your child’s tooth health. Laser cavity removal may also prevent dental anxiety.

As we advance in age, dental care remains an important part of maintaining overall health. Family dentist Dr. Ami Barakat possesses the knowledge and training necessary to treat patients of all ages, including children, parents and grandparents.

For family dentistry in Ottawa and the surrounding areas, please contact experienced family dentist Dr. Ami Barakat at Dentisty @ Main to schedule a consultation.
